Improving the collection of national administrative data on femicide in the EU
In the EU, femicide data is primarily derived from homicide statistics, which mainly allow for the identification of femicides committed by intimate partners or family members. This approach underestimates the true extent of femicide, hiding gender-related killings outside these relationships, such as killings of women in prostitution. Emerging research highlights the need to expand the category of femicide to capture the full extent of women killed by men’s violence, ensuring a more accurate understanding and response to the phenomenon.
