Highlights - Impact of the Middle East Crisis on Global Food Security Exchange of Views - Committee on Development

DEVE will hold an exchange of views on the impact of the Middle East crisis on global food security. Disruptions to trade through the Strait of Hormuz are affecting global commodity flows, increasing fuel and fertiliser costs and raising food production costs worldwide. With contributions from IFAD, FAO and ECDPM, the discussion will explore impacts on partner countries and possible EU responses.The DEVE Committee will host an exchange of views on the impact of the crisis in the Middle East on global food security. Ongoing disruptions to trade through the Strait of Hormuz corridor are triggering a major shock to global commodity flows. Rising fuel and fertiliser costs are already increasing production costs for farmers worldwide, with potential impacts on crop yields, production patterns and food prices. These developments risk exacerbating food insecurity, particularly in vulnerable partner countries. Members will discuss the short-, medium- and long-term implications of these disruptions and assess how they are affecting food systems globally. The exchange will also consider what actions the EU can take to mitigate these effects and support resilience. The discussion will feature contributions from Álvaro Lario (IFAD), Máximo Torero-Cullen (FAO) and Koen Dekeyser (ECDPM).
